August 2022

Hello Everyone,

It’s almost time to think about going back to school! It’s hard to believe we are approaching that time of the year. Every year I would get excited about taking my kids to get their supplies for the school year. There was something so exciting about buying yet to be sharpened pencils, and notebooks with blank pages to be filled with so much new information! I used to let my kids pick out their supplies as a way to inspire and encourage them to want to start out the school year on the right foot. I always managed to sneak in a few extra things for myself as well.

This year we will be volunteering with local agencies, the D300 Food Pantry and Second Bridge, to help with their back-to-school drives, as they assist multiple families and children who need an extra lift. The State is also helping out this year by suspending the sales tax on back-to-school supplies August 5-14. Even if you don’t have school age kids anymore, I hope you will consider picking up a few extra items and donating them to our partner agencies, or any organization you know that supports students.

I hope I see you out in the community; between all the wonderful events, and going door to door to talk with constituents directly, I am bound to run into you.

Take care, Suzanne

August’s Adoptable Pet of The Month
Meet Rainbow!

Rainbow (Bow) is a gorgeous, medium/long hair young kitty. Her tail is amazing and her beautiful paws are perfectly round. Rainbow likes to play with cat toys, especially wand toys. She loves hanging out on her cat tree by a window. Her favorite person is her human foster sister, who is a cat savvy 10-year-old. They play and sleep together. Bow would need to be introduced slowly to other resident cats and would do best with older children (10 and up).

Please email adopt@hoofwoofmeow.org with any questions. You can find out adoption procedures and application on our website – www.hoofwoofmeow.org

Statement on Vandalism at
Uprising Bakery & Cafe

While visiting my new grandchild in California, a visit that I joyfully anticipated, I received the news about the violence that took place against UpRising Bakery & Cafe in Lake in the Hills.

Seeing pictures of the destruction to the Cafe and reading the description of the hateful words that were sprayed across the cafe, I felt disturbed and saddened that a small local business in our community could be harassed and targeted.

Now I’m angry and grateful that the alleged perpetrator is being charged with a hate crime. I will be supporting our law enforcement agencies working to bring justice to the owners of Uprising and encourage everyone to support this business when they once again open their doors.

While I support peaceful demonstrations, I expect any violent acts to be fully punished. I have reached out to the owner of Uprising Cafe and am prepared to extend the full support of my office to help with their recovery.

Let’s not ever let hate win.

Ness Encourages Families to Utilize
Tax Holiday for Back-to-School Shopping

Carpentersville, Ill. – Representative Suzanne Ness (D-Crystal Lake) wants to inform all those in her area and beyond of the tax holiday coming up August 5 through the 14. During this 10-day period, sales tax on classroom supplies and other qualified items such as clothing and shoes will decrease from 6.25% to 1.25%.

“I hope this tax holiday eases some of the burden that comes with back-to-school shopping,” said Ness. “The extreme inflation is hitting Illinois very hard, this will hopefully be one less thing that families will have to worry about during this time.”

The tax holiday for school supplies was passed back in April as part of a bigger relief package for residents of Illinois. Along with the reduction of sales tax on school supplies, there is no longer sales tax on groceries until June 30, 2023 and the regularly scheduled tax increase on gasoline has been pushed to January 2023.

Gun Policy Survey Results

We recently shared an informal survey that covered gun regulation and safety policy. Thank you to the 187 constituents who took the time to complete the survey. Below, you will find the survey results.

In addition to the informal survey, we received many phone calls and emails from constituents sharing their thoughts, ideas, and concerns related to the topic of gun regulation and safety, gun violence, and second amendment rights. As a result, I signed on as a Co Sponsor to House Bill 5522- a bill that would ban the sale of assault weapons in the State of Illinois.
